ISIS threatens to target Champions League quarter-finals

Security measures have been “significantly” stepped up in Paris a day before the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona on Wednesday in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals in football.

The reinforcement came after French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on Tuesday that Islamic State was “threatening” to target the match.

The minister explained that “the police chief has significantly stepped up security measures” after “a described threat that ISIS spoke publicly about”.

He stressed that ISIS has threatened all quarter-final matches held on Tuesday and Wednesday, not just the upcoming match between the Parisian and Catalan teams at the Parc des Princes.

A source familiar with the file told AFP that “ISIS threatened the first leg matches of the quarter-finals of the Champions League (on Tuesday and Wednesday), not specifically in France, through its communication channels.”
