Iran targets Israel with ballistic missiles, drones in response to Syria attack

Iran said Saturday that it had fired dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at targets inside Israel, which comes in retaliation for the Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria. A US military official later told Al Arabiya English that US forces had shot down some of those Iranian drones.

The White House also said Iran had begun an airborne attack against Israel and was “likely to unfold over a number of hours.”

“An informed source told IRNA that the first batch of Iranian ballistic missiles has been fired at targets deep within [Israel],” Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported. Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also said an attack was underway.

“In response to the numerous crimes committed by the Zionist regime, including the attack on the consular section… the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired dozens of missiles and drones at specific targets inside the occupied territories (Israel),” state television quoted an IRGC statement as saying.

Operation Honest Promise is “being carried out with the approval of the Supreme National Security Council under the supervision of the General Staff of the Armed Forces,” the statement said.

The April 1 strike, which the US said Israel was behind, leveled the Iranian consulate in Damascus and killed seven IRGC members, two of them generals.
