Iraq's PM Will Run in Upcoming Presidential Election

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has announced that he will be running in the upcoming Presidential election, which is scheduled to take place in May.
PM Abadi has led Iraq since 2014, taking over from former PM Nouri al-Maliki, shortly after ISIS seized the city of Mosul, and other parts of Iraq.
Former PM Nouri al-Maliki has remained active in Iraqi politics, currently serving as the country’s Vice President.
Haidar al-Abadi heads the Dawa party, which has strong ties to Iran. Presidential elections are also scheduled to take place in the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq later this year.
