Russian Defense Ministry: Washington decided to withdraw from nuclear arms control treaty two years ago

Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that the United States has decided to withdraw from the medium- and short-range missile control treaty a few years before accusing Moscow of violating the treaty.

“Two years before Russia was accused of violating the treaty, they did not only take the decision, but also started preparing for the production of banned medium- and short-range missiles.” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

President Donald Trump, announcing the United States intent to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, said “The withdrawal process will be completed within six months, Russia had been violating the agreement and we cannot be the only country in the world unilaterally bound by this treaty, or any other.”

Worth to note that the “Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty” was signed between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1987, not to manufacture, test or deploy any ballistic, winged or Intermediate-range missiles, and to destroy all missile systems with an average range of 1,000-5500 km and a short range of 500-1000 km.
