Russia will use S-300, S-400 systems to push US forces out of Syria – US military think-tank

According to the US military think-tank ‘Institute for the Study of War’ (ISW), the newly formed air defense network established by Russia in Syria which uses advanced anti-aircraft missile systems such as the S-300 and S-400 is part of a long-term Kremlin strategy to push American forces to withdraw from the Arab republic.

The ISW report says that the establishment of a comprehensive air defense network in Syria by Russia – the backbone of which are the S-300 and S-400 systems as well as advanced electronic warfare equipment – has effectively been completed.

The existence of this air defense shield, according to the ISW report, can greatly complicate the ability of the US and its NATO allies to operate across Syria and the eastern Mediterranean should Russia chose to use it as pressure point during a time of escalation in the region or elsewhere.

This potential strategic predicament, the ISW report claims, is evidence enough that the Kremlin’s long-term strategy in Syria is to push US forces to withdraw from the country in order to fully consolidate Russian entrenchment.

“The US and Israel both must be prepared to suppress a larger number of [Russian and Syrian] air defense systems and use more expensive stealth aircraft such as the F-35 in Syria,” the report concluded.
