Israeli airstrikes endangered lives of Russian military in Syria: Lavrov

The Israeli military has not always complied with its obligations to notify the Russian military before attacking Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Spain’s El-Pais on Monday.

“Unfortunately, the Israeli side did not always strictly comply with its obligations, especially as regards the obligation to notify the Russian military about combat operations in Syrian territory,” Lavrov began.

The Russian top diplomat said that Israel’s recklessness has endangered the lives of their military personnel on a number of occasions, including an incident in March 2017 near the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra (var. Tadmur).

“On several occasions this endangered the lives of our military in Syria, for example, in the Israeli aerial bombardment in the region of Palmyra in March 2017,” Lavrov added.

While an Israeli minister alleged that the IAF has targeted an Iranian weapons shipment to Hezbollah since the delivery since the delivery of the S-300 system to Syria, a military source in Damascus has denied these claims, adding that no airstrikes have occurred over the last 45 days.

On September 17th, the Syrian military accidentally shot down a Russian IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft during a large-scale Israeli attack on the coastal province of Latakia.

Russia has blamed Israel for the downing of the IL-20 because an IAF F-16 was reportedly using the former as cover from the Syrian air defense missiles.
