Russia reacts on latest Israeli airstrikes on Syria

Russia has commented on recent Israeli airstrikes on Syria, which targeted military sites in the provinces of Tartous and Hama, in central and western Syria.

The chairman of the Russian State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee “Leonid Slutsky”, called on Israel to stop its attacks on Syrian government forces.

“The Israeli airstrikes on Syria are unacceptable,” Slutsky told Interfax news agency. “It does not serve the stability of the situation in the country and is negatively reflected on the region.”

He added that Israel had assured Russia that it would target Syrian forces if it cooperated with Hezbollah. “But they are bombing civilians, not Hezbollah.”

He added: “Regardless of the efforts of our opponents, the situation in the region and beyond, tends to eradicate the international terrorism from the territory of Syria,” stressing that the point of no return has been crossed and the alleged “State of the Caliphate” will never return to Syria.

For his part, Vice-chairman of the Russian State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee, Alexei Chiba, stressed that “Russia should ask Israel to stop attacking Syrian government forces.”

“This (Israeli bombing on Syria) is unacceptable,” Chiba was quoted as saying by the state news agency Novosti. “It is necessary to direct stricter demands to stop all attacks on Syrian government forces.”

Chiba also stressed that “any attacks on the Syrian army serves the interests of terrorists.”
